Le nouvel évêque de San Diego, Mgr Robert McElroy, a demandé que ne soit pas enlevée la statue du Bienheureux Junipero Serra présente au sein du Capitole à Washington DC. La statue honore ce franciscain connu comme le «père de la Californie » qui sera canonisé le 23 septembre.
Le Capitole contient une galerie de statues, rendant hommage à de grands personnages qui ont marqué l’Histoire des Etats-Unis d’Amérique. Le choix de ces personnages se veut aussi représentatif des différents états qui composent ces Etats-Unis d’Amérique.
Or, le 13 avril, le Sénat de Californie a approuvé par 22 voix contre 10 le remplacement de la statue qui symbolise la Californie, souhaitant mettre une statue de Sally Ride, première femme astronaute américaine mais aussi militante lesbienne, à la place du Bienheureux Junipero Serra par Sally Ride. La proposition de modification doit encore être approuvée par le gouverneur de Californie, Jerry Brown, et par l’assemblée de l’Etat qui votera sur ce sujet.
L’évêque de San Diego, Mgr McElroy, a déclaré que le bienheureux Junipero Serra est une « figure fondatrice » de l’histoire de la Californie et l’un des rares hispaniques honorés au Capitole, qu’il représente ainsi un Etat qui « a rapidement connu une majorité hispanique ».
Mais c’est surtout une trace du catholicisme que certains lobbies veulent ainsi écarter du Capitole au profit d’une héroïne lesbienne. Une vérité que l’évêque de San Diego a peine à pointer du doigt.
