En visite en Russie, à Sotchi, et à la veille d’un sommet Russie-Turquie-Iran, Bachar al-Assad a rencontré Vladimir Poutine, lundi soir. Le chef du Kremlin a tenu à féliciter son homologue syrien pour « les résultats obtenus dans la lutte contre le terrorisme » estimant que « la défaite inévitable et définitive des terroristes » était proche en Syrie.
Les deux présidents se sont rencontrés afin de discuter, a expliqué le président russe, du « règlement politique et pacifique à long terme » de la situation syrienne. Il a par ailleurs souligné la nécessité du processus politique : « Nous avons l’intérêt à faire avancer le processus politique (…). Nous ne voulons pas regarder en arrière et nous sommes prêts à un dialogue avec tous ceux qui souhaitent vraiment aboutir à un règlement politique. »
Pour Bachar al-Assad, ce fut aussi l’occasion d’exprimer « la reconnaissance du peuple syrien » pour l’aide de la Russie dans la défense « de l’intégrité territoriale et de l’indépendance du pays ».
Le Kremlin a indiqué que Vladimir Poutine allait également s‘entretenir avec Donald Trump, ce mardi 21 novembre, avant la rencontre tri-partite : « Dès aujourd’hui (lundi, ndlr) une discussion avec l’émir du Qatar est prévue, et demain (ce mardi), avec le président des États-Unis Donald Trump », a déclaré la présidence.
