Michel Bernard, écrivain et haut fonctionnaire, est l’un des meilleurs spécialistes de la Grande Guerre vue par ses combattants-écrivains, notamment Maurice Genevoix.
Le nom de Verdun restera à jamais associé à l’une des plus marquantes batailles de la première guerre mondiale. La bataille de Verdun s’est éternisée de février à décembre 1916. Près de trois cents jours de combats qui ont coûté la vie à environ trois cent mille soldats français et allemands !
Remarquablement bien écrit, ce bel album traite avec humanité de cette confrontation terrible, cruelle, dont nous commémorons le centenaire.
En outre, ce livre regorge d’images saisies par les photographes des armées pour immortaliser les sacrifices de ces hommes venus de tous horizons, y compris des lointaines colonies, pour se battre dans la boue des tranchées à l’appel de la mère patrie.
Qu’est-ce que la France ?, s’interroge l’auteur. « Elle est ce reflet de la mémoire entre deux miroirs de pierre. La pluie, la neige, le vent les usent et les effacent, d’autres mains y gravent à nouveau les mêmes noms, les noms de nos pères et ceux de la terre sur laquelle ils sont morts. », répond-il.
