Tandis qu’Air France suspend enfin ses vols vers la Sierra Leone, le virus Ebola continue de se répandre de « manière accélérée », selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS). Le bilan de l’OMS daté de ce jeudi 28 août recense officiellement 1.552 décès sur 3 069 malades. A titre de comparaison, une semaine auparavant, les chiffres faisaient état de 1.427 décès sur 2.615 patients recensés. Soit 125 nouveaux morts en une semaine. L’OMS prévoit désormais que le virus Ebola affectera au moins 20.000 personnes. Et fera vraisemblablement plus de 10.000 morts…
Selon l’agence de l’ONU, « plus de 40 % du nombre total des cas sont survenus au cours de trois dernières semaines ».
Le docteur David Nabarro, désigné coordinateur de l’ONU contre le virus Ebola, et le docteur Keiji Fukuda, directeur adjoint de l’OMS pour la sécurité sanitaire, ont estimé qu’il faudrait au moins six mois pour stopper l’épidémie qualifiée d’« incontrôlable » par Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
« La communauté sanitaire internationale a mis trop de temps à réagir », écrit Anja Wolz, coordinatrice d’urgence de MSF en Sierra Leone, dans le New England Journal of Medicine.
