Sur fond de tensions sociales, les différents syndicats politiques belges ont organisé une manifestation nationale à Bruxelles le mardi 24 mai. Plus de cinquante mille manifestants ont envahi Bruxelles à l’appel des syndicats. Parmi ces manifestants se trouvaient de nombreux militants d’extrême gauche. Le PTB, parti néo-stalinien-maoïste, étant crédité par les sondages de devenir le troisième parti francophone belge avec plus de 13% d’intentions de vote, les militants d’extrême gauche ont forcé le ton et provoqué des affrontements.
En fin de manifestation, des incidents violents ont éclaté, notamment aux abords de la gare du Midi. Un commissaire de police a été grièvement blessé au cours des altercations.
