Le 19 avril 2016, la chaîne de magasins Target avait annoncé que les personnes transgenres pourraient utiliser « les toilettes ou les cabines qui correspondent à leur identité de genre» dans ses magasins. Cela impliquait que les hommes qui s’identifient comme femmes puissent entrer dans les toilettes et cabines d’essayage des femmes, tandis que les femmes qui se définissent comme hommes pouvaient accéder à celles des hommes.
Le 20 avril, l’American Family Association (AFA) appelait au boycott de Target, avec une campagne qui a recueilli plus de 1,4 millions de signatures. L’AFA a averti que la politique développée par Target « est exactement comme celle des prédateurs sexuels qui ont accès à leurs victimes. »
Le site Business Insider, spécialisé dans les nouvelles du monde des affaires, note que la fréquentation dans les magasins Target « est en baisse pour la première fois depuis des années. » Sa balance du deuxième trimestre de 2016 montre une baisse de 2,2% des opérations en magasin, et les ventes de Target ont chuté d’un niveau général de 7,2%, ses actions sont à la baisse.
Selon le magazine économique américain Fortune, l’impact du boycott est tel que la chaîne Target va refaire les toilettes de tous ses magasins afin de tenter de mettre fin aux critiques sans non plus se dédire.
