Etrange personnage que ce Pol Vandromme (1927-2009). Belge, il a été à la fois journaliste, écrivain et critique littéraire. Il a notamment dirigé Le Rappel, quotidien régional de tendance sociale-chrétienne, avant de finir sa carrière de journaliste dans l’éphémère magazine socialiste L’Instant. Politiquement, il s’affichait volontiers de gauche, mais ses chroniques littéraires et les biographies qu’il a publiées témoignaient de la fascination qu’exerçaient sur lui des auteurs politiquement incorrects tels que Robert Brasillach, Lucien Rebatet, Pierre Drieu la Rochelle, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Charles Maurras, Maurice Barrès… On décèle également chez Vandromme une affection particulière pour les « Hussards » et, en particulier, pour Roger Nimier. Il entretenait des relations avec la galaxie des éditeurs de droite, fréquentait les salons de l’aristocratie belge et se montrait aux activités mondaines de la gauche caviar.
Les paradoxes de Pol Vandromme se ressentent dans cette galerie de portraits regroupés sous le titre Une indifférence de rébellion. Vandromme tente de les justifier en affirmant se placer hors du champs idéologique mais ses attirances évidentes pour le camp des maudits sont fréquemment contrebalancées par les coups de griffes qu’il leur porte. Même lorsqu’il dresse le portrait d’Hergé, il ne peut s’empêcher d’osciller de droite à gauche. Etait-ce le prix pour conserver jusqu’au bout ses entrées dans tous les milieux ? Ou était-il véritablement écartelé, lui qui avait reçu une éducation catholique maurassienne dans un Hainaut belge dominé après-guerre par l’ultra-gauche ?
Ce livre confirme en tout cas l’amour immodéré de Pol Vandromme pour la langue française, « vierge de franglais » !
