Coline Dupuy, passionnée d’Histoire, est scénariste de plusieurs bandes dessinées consacrées à de grands personnages de l’Histoire de France. Régis Parenteau-Denoël, après avoir démarré dans le storyboard de séries TV animées, s’est lancé dans la bande dessinée et enchaîne depuis quelques années les albums aux thèmes historiques. Ils ont associé avec brio leurs talents pour publier un superbe album consacré au héros contre-révolutionnaire Cathelineau.
C’est la piété de Cathelineau qui en fit un soldat. C’est sa ferme volonté de défendre la religion catholique et ses prêtres qui l’amena à prendre la tête de ce qu’on a appelé l’armée catholique et royale.
Cette bande dessinée parvient à parfaitement resituer les événements. Après la Révolution de 1789, la République vole le blé des paysans et emprisonne les curés, tout cela au nom de la liberté. Même des gens initialement bien disposés à l’égard des premières mesures révolutionnaires menées au prétexte de mettre fin aux privilèges vont déchanter en s’apercevant que la Révolution se fait contre la religion. Ce fut par exemple le cas de M. d’Elbée, ancien officier, qui mettra son expérience au service de Cathelineau.
Cet album illustre surtout à merveille comment la Foi a guidé tout au long de son existence Jacques Cathelineau, déjà très respecté avant que ne débute l’insurrection contre-révolutionnaire en Anjou. Il en fut l’âme et le garant de la bonne conduite et du respect des finalités, n’omettant jamais de faire remercier Dieu par un Te Deum pour chaque victoire obtenue.
Jusqu’au jour funeste où il fut atteint d’une balle qui entraîna une gangrène mortelle, Cathelineau fut un modèle héroïque de soldat du Christ dont le comportement toujours exemplaire lui valut le surnom de « saint de l’Anjou ».
