Le rabbin Elazar Rompler, 46 ans, membre de la communauté hassidique Lev Tahor, a été inculpé mardi devant le tribunal de district de Jérusalem pour avoir agressé et maltraité des enfants de neuf et dix ans entre 2009 et 2011, alors qu’il était directeur d’une école appartenant à cette communauté au Canada.
Le rabbin Elazar Rompler est notamment accusé d’avoir déshabillé, attaché et battu un enfant pendant plusieurs heures parce qu’il était soupçonné d’avoir volé de l’argent dans une tirelire de charité. Il est également accusé d’avoir demandé à d’autres enseignants de tenir un enfant au sol et de le battre à plusieurs reprises pour avoir prétendument menti.
La communauté juive Lev Tahor a souvent déménagé pour échapper à des accusations criminelles. En 2014, la communauté a quitté le Canada pour le Guatemala suite à des accusations d’abus sur enfants et des mariages d’enfants. En 2017, des membres de cette communauté s’étaient installés au Mexique.
Le rabbin Rompler a été arrêté en décembre 2019, après son arrivée en Israël. Il est jusqu’ici simplement assigné à résidence.
