Quelles sont les positions religieuses des 200 nations du monde, notamment autour de la notion de « religion d’état » ?

D’après le rapport du Pew Resarch Center datant du 3 octobre 2017 et intitulé Many countries favor specific religions, 42 % des pays du monde ont une politique religieuse positive. Il distingue les « religions d’état », dont le statut officiel est corroboré par la constitution ou la loi fondamentale mais qui n’est pas toujours favorisé ; et les « religions à statut préférentiel » ou « religion favorisée », qui ont des privilèges par rapport aux autres religions, notamment en matière financière, fiscale ou légale, étant généralement considérée comme la « religion traditionnelle » du pays. Les pays considérés comme athées exercent un contrôle extrême sur les activités religieuses, allant parfois jusqu’à la persécution ouverte, même si la constitution garantit une « liberté religieuse » qui n’est jamais appliquée. Dans ces pays, le dictateur peut lui-même se dire d’une religion (généralement musulmane), mais en fait ne tolère qu’un islam soumis à sa botte. Quant aux pays considérés comme « indifférents »,  cela peut tout aussi bien désigner des nations qui comme la France accorde la liberté de culte à tout le monde que des nations comme les Etats-Unis qui accordent de larges privilèges fiscaux à toutes les religions, des plus sérieuses (christianisme) au plus dangereuses (satanisme) en passant par les plus loufoques (pastafarisme).

• 44 pays ont une religion d’état, dont 27 musulmans : Afghanistan, Algérie, Arabie Saoudite, Bahreïn, Bangladesh, Brunei, Comores Djibouti, Egypte, Emirats Arabes Unis, Irak, Iran, Jordanie, Koweït, Libye, Malaisie, Maldives, Maroc, Mauritanie, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Sahara Occidental, Somalie, Tunisie, Yémen. Il y a 14 états chrétiens, 6 sont catholiques : Costa Rica, République Dominicaine, Liechtenstein, Malte, Monaco, Vatican ; 6 sont protestants : Danemark, Islande, Norvège, Royaume-Uni, Tuvalu, Zambie et 2 sont orthodoxes : Arménie, Grèce. 2 sont bouddhistes Bhoutan et Cambodge et 1 juif : Israël.
• 40 pays ont une « religion favorisée », dont 5 musulmans : Erythrée, Indonésie, Soudan, Syrie, Turquie. 31 sont chrétiens dont 17 catholiques : Andorre ; Angola, Argentine, Bénin, Cap Vert, Espagne, Guatemala, Guinée Equatoriale, Honduras, Italie, Lituanie, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Pérou, Pologne, Togo ; 8 sont orthodoxes : Belarus, Bulgarie, Géorgie, Macédoine, Moldavie, Roumanie, Russie, Serbie et 6 sont protestantes : Finlande, Liberia, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Samoa, Swaziland, Tonga. 4 sont bouddhistes : Laos, Mongolie, Myanmar, Sri Lanka.
• 10 pays sont officiellement athées et versent dans la persécution religieuse. Tous sont communistes ou post-communistes : Azerbaïdjan, Chine, Corée du Nord, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Kirghizistan, Ouzbékistan, Tadjikistan, Turkménistan, Vietnam.
• Les 106 autres nations du monde sont indifférentes sur le plan religieux.

Il est intéressant de noter également le degré préférentiel des 83 pays (le Vatican n’est pas concerné) vis-à-vis de la religion dominante dans trois critères (éducation religieuse, biens religieux et autres activités) et sur trois degré (1 = financement disproportionné, ½ = neutralité dans le financement, 0 = aucun financement) :

• Niveau 3: Afghanistan, Arabie Saoudite, Bahreïn, Bhoutan, Brunei, Cap Vert, Djibouti, Emirats Arabes Unis, Géorgie, Haïti, Israël, Jordanie, Koweït, Lituanie, Malaisie, Maldives, Mauritanie, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Pérou, Tunisie, Turquie.
• Niveau 2 ½ : Algérie, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Egypte, Irak, Italie, Moldavie, Maroc, Palestine, Qatar, Royaume-Uni, Sahara Occidental, Soudan, Zambie.
• Niveau 2 : Andorre, Arménie, Belarus, Cambodge, République Dominicaine, Finlande, Grèce, Guinée Equatoriale, Indonésie, Islande, Laos, Macédoine, Nicaragua, Norvège, Panama, Russie, Serbie, Swaziland, Togo.
