Ce n’est pas parce que la FAO a mis deux ans pour mettre à jour ses données sur son site que le monde cesse de tourner. Comme nous l’avons vu pour le vin, chaque produit agricole a son organisation, celle qui transmet probablement les chiffres de production à la FAO. Le dernier rapport de l’année 2017, celui du 30 novembre, vient d’être publié par l’ICCO (International Cocoa Organization, dont le siège est, comme il se doit, à Abidjan depuis mars dernier, ayant déménagé de Londres).
La récolte de cacao pour la saison 2017 (qui, comme les années scolaires et les championnats sportifs est décalée, s’étendant du 1er octobre 2016 au 30 septembre 2017) donne une production mondiale de 4,7 millions de tonnes, soit une augmentation de 7 %. On ne constate pas de mouvements importants dans les producteurs, mais par contre un accroissement de la part des deux premiers producteurs, la Côte d’Ivoire et le Ghana, qui passe de 55 % en 2015 à 63,6 % ! Voici donc les principaux producteurs de cacao dans le monde en 2017 :
1 – COTE D’IVOIRE : 43 % de la production mondiale
2 – GHANA : 20,6 %
3 – INDONESIE : 6,17 % (la part de l’Indonésie a été divisée par 3 en 12 ans !)
4 – EQUATEUR : 5,74 %
5 – CAMEROUN : 5,10 %
6 – NIGERIA : 4,89 %
7 – BRESIL : 3,70 %
8 – PEROU : 2,34 %
9 – REPUBLIQUE DOMINICAINE : 1,59 %
10 – COLOMBIE : 1,17 %
11 – PAPOUASIE NOUVELLE-GUINEE : 0,85 %
Cette croissance de la production, née notamment de l’intensification de la production ivoirienne de dépasser les 2 millions de tonnes, et ce, malgré une saison 2016 médiocre qui faisait craindre une pénurie. Pari réussi mais qui va entraîner un excédent de 371.000 tonnes, plus que la production du n°3 mondial ! Et ce, dans un contexte de flambée des cours, le cacao passant 1975 à 2417 £ la tonne entre février et juillet 2017.
