Il y aurait actuellement sur terre 14.923 armes nucléaires en service. C’est la Russie qui en possède le plus avec 7.000 têtes dont 1.910 déployées, 2.390 en réserves et 2.700 attendant d’être démantelées. La Russie possède 15 sous-marins nucléaires lanceurs d’engins (SNLE) contre 67 à l’époque de la guerre froide (Petrotavlovsk, Sviatoï Gueorgui Pobedonosets, Riazan, Verkhotourié, Iekaterinbourg, BS-64, Toula, Briansk, Karelia, Novomoskovsk, Dimitri Donskoï, Iouri Dolgorouki, Alexandr Nevski, Vladimir Monomakh et Knyaz Vladimir) Les Etats-Unis viennent en seconde position avec 6.900 têtes, dont 1.800 déployées, 2.200 en réserve et 2.800 attendant d’être démantelées. Les Etats-Unis possèdent 13 SNLE (Henry M. Jackson, Alabama, Alaska, Nevada, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Maine, Wyoming et Louisiane, tous de classe Ohio.)
La France avec 300 missiles se tient à la troisième place. 290 missiles français sont déployés, plus 10 en réserve et la France possède 4 SNLE : Le Triomphant, Le Téméraire, Le Vigilant et Le Terrible. Vient ensuite la Chine avec 260 têtes, dont un nombre inconnu est déployé. La Chine possède 4 SNLE de classe Jin. La Grande-Bretagne joue dans cette catégorie avec 215 têtes, 120 déployées et 95 en réserve. Elle possède aussi 4 SNLE (Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant, Vengeance).
Le Pakistan et sa sœur ennemie l’Inde ont respectivement 140 et 120 têtes nucléaires sans que l’on sache combiens ont déployées. L’Inde possède un SNLE, l’Arihant. Israël compte 80 charges nucléaires, toutes déployées, mais aucun SNLE. Selon certaines sources, les 5 sous-marins classiques de classe Dolphin (Tanin, Rahav, Dolphin, Leviathan et Tkuma) pourraient en tirer. Quant à la Corée du Nord, son arsenal est estimé à 8 têtes nucléaires.
