A l’approche des élections municipales en Belgique, le CD&V (parti démocrate-chrétien flamand) avait prévu de placer un juif ultra-orthodoxe sur sa liste à Anvers, ville dans laquelle cette communauté est très présente.
Lors de la conférence de presse de présentation des candidats, le ministre Kris Peeters (qui sera tête de liste CD&V à Anvers) avait à sa droite Aron Berger. Mais ce juif ultra-orthodoxe a rapidement créé une vive polémique en déclarant qu’il refusait de serrer la main aux femmes, rejoignant le comportement de certains islamistes.
Ensuite, on apprenait que ce même Aron Berger avait été reconnu coupable de vol par le tribunal correctionnel d’Anvers fin mars 2018. Il avait soutiré 28.500 euros à un vieil homme malade et vulnérable.
Finalement, devant le flot de critiques, Aron Berger a retiré sa candidature.
