Thierry Lentz, directeur de la Fondation Napoléon et auteur de nombreux livres et articles sur le Premier Empire, signe la présentation et les notes qui accompagnent la réédition aux éditions Perrin du livre de Pierre-Louis Rœderer (1754-1835) consacré au dernier été de la monarchie.
Pierre-Louis Rœderer fut tour à tour député à la Constituante, procureur général syndic du département de Paris, membre de l’Institut, conseiller d’Etat et sénateur sous le Consulat et l’Empire, ministre du royaume de Naples et du grand-duché de Berg et enfin pair de France sous la monarchie de Juillet.
Cette chronique de cinquante jours court de la première invasion des Tuileries, le 20 juillet 1792, à la journée du 10 août, celle de l’assaut au Palais-Royal, du massacre des Suisses et de la suspension du Roi, bientôt enfermé au Temple. Ce jour-là, Rœderer est aux premières loges, aux côtés de la famille royale, et c’est lui qui la conduit à l’Assemblée pour, croit-il, la sauver. Or, le piège se referme sur le monarque. La Révolution bascule dans la Terreur.
