Un prêtre jésuite néerlandais Frans van der Lugt a été tué en Syrie, dans la ville d’Homs. Il a été emmené par deux hommes armés qui l’ont battu, puis tué de deux balles dans la tête. Le prêtre se trouvait dans la ville depuis 1966 et avait refusé de quitter la ville, assiégé par l’armée syrienne, pour rester auprès du peuple syrien:« le peuple syrien m’a tant donné, tant de gentillesse, tant d’inspiration, et tout ce que je possède. Maintenant qu’il souffre, je dois partager sa peine et ses difficultés. » Pour l’heure, personne n’était en mesure de dire quels étaient les motifs de ce meurtre. Il n’en reste pas moins que les religieux continuent d’être visés dans cette révolution syrienne.
Le Vatican a confirmé sa mort, tout en faisant part de son émotion par l’entre-mise de son porte-parole le père Frederico Lombardi:« C’est ainsi que meurt un homme de paix, qui, avec un grand courage, a voulu rester fidèle, dans une situation extrêmement risquée et difficile, à ce peuple syrien à qui il avait donné depuis longtemps sa vie et son assistance spirituelle.Dans ce moment de grande douleur, nous exprimons aussi notre grande fierté et gratitude d’avoir eu un confère aussi proche des plus souffrants, dans le témoignage de l’amour de Jésus jusqu’à la fin. »
