Décidément, « The Don » a l’air d’apprécier les catholiques, ce qui nous change agréablement de ses collègues français. Selon l’agence de presse américaine Religion News Service dans un communiqué du 27 juillet, Samuel « Sam » Dale Brownback, 46e gouverneur du Kansas (fonction qu’il occupe depuis janvier 2011) – après en avoir été sénateur de 1996 à 2011 et Représentant de son 2e district (Topeka) de 1995 à 1996 – remplacera au poste d’ ambassadeur extraordinaire des États-Unis chargé de la liberté religieuse internationale Rabbi David N. Saperstein, nommé par Obama (et par ailleurs membre du comité directeur l’association racialiste anti-blanche NAACP) et dont le mandat s’arrêtait au 20 janvier.
Sous réserve de l’acceptation de sa nomination par le Sénat, Sam Brownback s’est converti au catholicisme en 2002. Marié à Mary Stauffer, il est père de 5 enfants dont 2 adoptés. Il a été remarqué pour ses positions proches de Reagan en matière économique (baisse des taxes) et également pour son combat éthique et pro-vie : opposition à l’avortement, refus d’envoyer de la chair à canon en Irak, opposition à la peine de mort (dont il était partisan quand il était protestant) et dénonciation du génocide antichrétien au Darfour. Il est également partisan de la théorie du « dessein intelligeant » en matière d’évolution et bien entendu de la liberté scolaire. Chaque homme ayant sa part d’ombre, il est aussi un défenseur de l’immigration et un pro-israélien fanatique, partisan de l’expulsion des Palestiniens de Palestine, reliquat d’une jeunesse protestante.
