Le 30 juillet 2018, Donald Trump a reçu le Premier ministre italien et a notamment évoqué avec lui la problématique de l’immigration.

Je voudrais vraiment vous remercier infiniment d’être ici, nous sommes devenus amis lors du sommet du G7, nous nous sommes appelés … Je suis tout-à-fait d’accord avec ce que vous faites sur la migration, l’immigration illégale et même l’immigration légale. L’Italie a pris une position très ferme sur les frontières, une position que peu de pays ont prise et, franchement, c’est une très bonne chose à mon avis. Beaucoup d’autres pays d’Europe devraient faire pareil. Certains ont pris cette position depuis longtemps et s’en sortent beaucoup mieux. Donc je voudrais juste vous remercier, je suis heureux que vous soyez avec nous, c’est un honneur. Nous avons beaucoup de choses à nous dire sur le commerce, sur notre armée, vous commandez de nombreux avions. Les Etats-Unis ont un très gros déficit commercial comme d’habitude avec l’Italie d’environ 31 milliards de dollars, et je suis sûr que nous redresserons cela très vite, mais nous prenons cela comme un grand honneur de vous avoir ici.»
