Jacques Terpant est un véritable maître de la bande dessinée contemporaine mais il le vit avec humilité, généralement reclus dans son atelier, retiré dans son village. Il exerce ce métier depuis plus de trente ans et son art s’est bonifié avec le temps, comme les bons vins. Audacieux, il n’a jamais caché son admiration pour Jean Raspail, allant jusqu’à publier de remarquables adaptations en BD des romans Sept Cavaliers et Le Royaume de Borée. Les amateurs se souviendront aussi de Capitaine perdu dont Terpant est à la fois scénariste et dessinateur et qui nous plonge dans la fin de l’Amérique française. Sur un scénario de Jean Dufaux, il a redonné vie à Louis-Ferdinand Céline dans l’album Le chien de Dieu. Et, il y a peu, est sortie son adaptation de Nez de Cuir, célèbre roman de La Varende.

Les éditions Lohengrin viennent de publier un album intitulé Trait – Portraits qui permettra de connaître un peu mieux Jacques Terpant et ses sources d’inspiration. Son vieil ami Patrick Bellier, médecin de campagne, en signe les textes qui évoquent le cheminement de Jacques Terpant et quelques-unes de ses influences littéraires. Ces belles pages sont naturellement illustrées de superbes dessins signés Terpant.

Suivent ensuite quarante portraits d’un extraordinaire réalisme d’auteurs choyés par Jacques Terpant. Car l’un des avantages de vivre à la campagne, c’est de pouvoir consacrer beaucoup de son temps libre à la lecture. Jacques Terpant commence par un hommage à ses lectures de jeunesse avec le portrait d’Enid Blyton à qui l’on doit les fameuses aventures du Club des Cinq. Puis se dresse Robert Louis Stevenson dont L’île au trésor a suscité chez Terpant l’intérêt pour les pirates. Ces portraits, dont on admire chaque détail, sont un véritable hymne aux romans d’aventures, aux hussards et à quelques maudits. Arthur Conan Doyle, Hemingway, Lovecraft, Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Moebius, Jean Giono, Pierre Schœndœrffer, Georges Duby, Michel Déon, Robert Merle, Roger Nimier, Paul Morand, Ramuz, Drieu La Rochelle, Knut Hamsun, Jean de La Varende, Jean Raspail bien sûr, et quelques autres trônent ainsi dans cette galerie de haut vol.
