La municipalité d’Epône (Yvelines) a décidé de rénover le « Temple de David », présenté comme le plus vieux temple maçonnique de France.
Situé dans le parc du château, ce temple franc-maçon fut construit en 1785. Des fresques représentant Benjamin Franklin qui y travaille et d’autres symboles célébrant l’amitié entre la France et les États-Unis d’Amérique lui ont valu le surnom de « temple de l’amitié franco-américaine ».
Ce temple maçonnique servait de lieu de rendez-vous à Hérault de Séchelles et Danton durant la Révolution.
Selon la municipalité, les travaux de rénovation vont débuter en octobre et coûter 241 000 euros. Et ces travaux de rénovation seront entièrement à charge des contribuables puisqu’ils seront financés à 40 % par l’Etat, à 40 % par le Département et à 20 % par la municipalité.
