Le premier candidat élu est Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, le premier d’un important groupe de députés du Sinn Fein, le parti nationaliste irlandais, qui siégeront au parlement irlandais le Dail où se concentre le pouvoir législatif.
C’est la forte surprise des élections de samedi dernier qui ont eu lieu en République d’Irlande, le succès sans précédent de celui qui, fondé en 1905 et engagé pour l’indépendance de l’île et la réunification des deux Irlande, fut le bras politique de l’IRA (Irish Republican Army).
Le Sinn Fein arrive en tête avec 24,5 %, contre 22,2% pour le Fianna Fáil et 20,9% pour le Fine Gael, ce qui, en soi, représente une première historique. Le taux de participation s’est élevé à 62,9%. Cette élection renverse ainsi le quasi-monopole qu’exercent sur le pouvoir, depuis un siècle, les partis centriste Fine Gael et Fianna Fail, eux-mêmes héritiers des protagonistes de la guerre civile des années 1920. Le Sinn Fein est crédité selon les estimations entre 36 et 40 parlementaires, soit à peu près le maximum de ce qu’il peut obtenir, n’ayant présenté que quarante-deux candidats aux élections (contre 84 pour le FF et 82 pour le FG), ce qui limitera mécaniquement sa capacité à peser au Dail, qui compte cent soixante sièges.
Bien que défendant une politique sociale et sociétale très à gauche, le parti nationaliste reste le « diable » pour les deux partis du système, le Fine Gael et Fianna Fail, qui feront tout pour l’évincer de la constitution du futur gouvernement.
Cependant la montée du seul parti présent au Nord et au Sud de l’Irlande et ardent défenseur de la réunification, lance un signal fort à Londres. Qui peut craindre des pressions pour la tenue d’un référendum pour l’unification de l’île…
