Pierre Rusco, décédé le 8 juillet 2005, n’avait pas encore atteint l’âge de vingt ans lorsqu’il s’est engagé dans la Légion des Volontaires français contre le bolchévisme (LVF).
Les éditions Déterna ont réédité son récit haletant de quarante mois de combat sur le Front de l’Est, de 1942 à 1945, dans des conditions épouvantables. Il a beaucoup été écrit sur ce sujet. Mais ce livre est le témoignage d’un personnage qui a vécu les faits. Cela en fait un document historique utile pour comprendre les motivations d’un jeune Français prêt à tous les sacrifices pour empêcher le péril rouge de s’étendre. Cet ouvrage permet aussi de se rendre compte, dans le détail du quotidien de ces jeunes européens transformés du jour au lendemain en soldats et envoyés au combat à des milliers de kilomètres de chez eux, l’incroyable dureté de cette longue guerre sur le sol russe. Cet ouvrage permet aussi de rompre avec le manichéisme ambiant et de constater le patriotisme sincère qui animait nombre de ces combattants. Pierre Rusco nous parle de ses officiers, du capitaine Demessine, ancien des chasseurs alpins, revenu de la campagne de Norvège avec la Légion d’honneur et la Croix de guerre, et du lieutenant Flamand, venu de l’aviation, et vétéran de 1914-1918. En route pour le pays des Soviets !
