L’affaire a fait l’effet d’une bombe au Brésil mais a de quoi inquiéter également les consommateurs européens. Vendredi, au Brésil, la police a mené une vaste opération pour arrêter de nombreuses personnes impliquées dans un trafic de viande avariée, traitée ensuite avec des produits cancérigènes, puis reconditionnée et remise en vente ! Parmi les personnes arrêtées, on trouve des personnes importantes de l’industrie alimentaire brésilienne mais aussi des fonctionnaires corrompus, notamment des inspecteurs en charge du contrôle sanitaire.
Il faut noter que le plus important exportateur mondial de viande est cité dans ce dossier et le risque existe bien qu’une telle viande avariée se soit retrouvée sur le marché de l’exportation.
Démantèlement d’un vaste réseau de viande avariée au Brésil
JBS et BRF, les géants internationaux du secteur de la viande, figurent parmi la vingtaine d’entreprises impliquées dans ce scandale. Deux cadres supérieurs de BRF [un directeur et un gérant des relations institutionnelles] ont été arrêtés.
L’Union européenne a demandé au gouvernement brésilien des « éclaircissements complets et urgents ».
Le Brésil est le premier exportateur mondial de viande bovine et de volaille. A la Bourse de São Paulo, JBS et BRF ont déjà chuté respectivement de 10,6 % et de 7,25 %.
Or les deux groupes brésiliens développaient en ce moment leurs plans d’internationalisation. BRF a investi 1,6 milliard de dollars à l’étranger et a récemment acquis l’enseigne turque Banvit. BRF avait annoncé il y a peu la création d’une filiale spécialisée dans la viande halal (One Foods) à destination du marché de consommateurs musulmans.
Quant au géant JBS, il venait d’acquérir l’enseigne Plumrose aux Etats-Unis la semaine dernière.
