Etats-Unis – Un scandale éclabousse Bill de Blasio, le maire de New York, et sa police. Le FBI enquête sur 20 policiers de New York soupçonnés d’avoir accepté des « cadeaux » de deux hommes d’affaires juifs orthodoxes très introduits dans l’entourage du maire.
Les policiers sont soupçonnés d’être corrompus, par des « cadeaux » et des voyages à l’étranger, notamment en Israël et aux Caraïbes, offerts par Jeremy Reichberg et Jona Rechnitz, deux hommes d’affaires juifs.
Par ailleurs, Jeremy Reichberg et Jona Rechnitz, ont tous les deux participé au financement de la campagne électorale du maire de New York.
A ce stade de l’enquête, quatre policiers ont été déplacés et deux d’entre eux ont dû restituer leur arme de service et leur insigne, a indiqué jeudi le chef de la police de New York (NYPD), William Bratton, dans un communiqué.
Mais le principal suspect de l’enquête n’est autre que Philip Banks, pressenti pour devenir le numéro deux de la NYPD avant de démissionner brusquement en octobre 2014. Selon plusieurs médias américains, Philip Banks est soupçonné d’avoir perçu de l’argent et des billets d’avion et d’avoir profité de chambres d’hôtel, en échange de quoi Jona Rechnitz et Jeremy Reichberg auraient bénéficié de la « protection » de policiers.
Les passe-droits auraient également profité à d’autres membres de la communauté juive.
Une autre affaire pourrait être reliée à ce dossier de corruption. La police fédérale s’intéresse également à Norman Seabrook, président du syndicat des personnels surveillants pénitentiaires (Correction Officer’s Benevolent Association) de New York, qui aurait accepté lui-aussi des cadeaux et de l’argent, cette fois en contrepartie du placement de fonds appartenant au syndicat.
