Chesterton (1874 – 1936) est l’un des plus importants écrivains anglais du début du XXe siècle. Journaliste, poète, biographe, romancier, ce converti au catholicisme est particulièrement renommé pour ses œuvres apologétiques.

Ce livre s’adresse, selon les propres mots de Chesterton, à l’homme de la rue, lecteur bienveillant mais sceptique. Il s’agit d’approcher Saint François d’Assise par ce qu’il a de plus populaire et de plus pittoresque, de façon à conduire le lecteur à mieux comprendre la logique de son caractère et la cohérence de sa vie. C’est un essai sur le fondateur des franciscains qui parcourut le monde. Chesterton évoque le jeune Francesco Bernardone, le guerrier qui rêvait de faits d’armes. Puis François le bâtisseur. Ensuite François le jongleur de Dieu, puis le Povorello et enfin le miroir du Christ, jusqu’au prodige des stigmates.
