Yves Roman, professeur émérite d’histoire ancienne, est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages historiques traitant notamment du Haut-Empire romain.
Dans l’imaginaire collectif, Rome et les Romains sont souvent « résumés » par des clichés. Rome fut fondée par des bergers, des vagabonds, des hors-la-loi, avec une rivalité entre le Palatin et l’Aventin, placée sous les noms emblématiques de Romulus et Rémus, et dans un lieu marécageux. Cela explique le jeu de mots de Cicéron sur « la cité fangeuse de Romulus », un « ramassis » en quelque sorte suivant une idée qui devait être largement répandue en Méditerranée.
Dès l’origine, on peut concéder au populus Romanorum une vue typée, largement caractéristique, identitaire. Sur ces bases, les héritiers des bergers, compagnons de Romulus, allèrent conquérir le monde. Le monde fut alors impérial et, paradoxalement, placé à la discrétion d’une république. Le Sénat et le peuple, pour reprendre les formules canoniques, agissaient de conserve en ce sens. Il restait à organiser le monde. C’est ce que les Romains firent avec opiniâtreté. Cependant, ce ne fut pas sans mal, non à cause de la rébellion des anciens dominés qui devenaient tous les jours davantage les sujets d’un Dominus (Maître), selon l’appellation courante du Prince à partir de Trajan, mais à cause de l’instabilité politique au centre, appelée ou non à durer à chaque changement de « règne ». Une « Belle Epoque » finit cependant par arriver, amenant la stabilité avec les Antonins. Le décloisonnement engendré par la conquête sous la République se transformait en mondialisation. C’est cette aventure qu’examine l’historien Yves Roman en ne négligeant pas les aspects culturel, économique et anthropologique.
