Tom Kiefer, ancien employé des douanes américaines, s’est lancé dans un projet artistique qu’il a appelé « El Sueño Americano » (« Le rêve américain ») et qui consiste à photographier les objets que transportent les immigrés clandestins lors de leurs tentatives de traverser illégalement la frontière entre le Mexique et les Etats-Unis.

Lorsque ces immigrés clandestins sont arrêtés par les agents des douanes, ils sont fouillés et la plupart des objets qu’ils transportent sont jetés dans des poubelles par les douaniers. Tom Kiefer a donc photographié le contenu de ces poubelles.

On y trouve du savon, des vêtements, du dentifrice, des brosses et peignes. Et beaucoup de préservatifs…
