Paul-François Paoli, chroniqueur au Figaro, est l’auteur de plusieurs essais politiques.
Dans cet ouvrage sous-titré La république des bons sentiments, Paul-François Paoli commence par rappeler que la gauche n’aime pas les débats. Quand un débat de civilisation la dérange, la gauche botte en touche au nom des sacro-saintes « valeurs républicaines ». La gauche s’est auto-attribuée une supériorité d’ordre moral fondée sur l’idée que, par définition, l’homme de gauche est noble et généreux tandis que l’homme de droite est égoïste et mesquin. La gauche prétend ainsi avoir le monopole du cœur et de la compassion.
Dans la suite de cette logique, ceux qui émettent des réticences à l’afflux de demandeurs d’asile sont présentés comme des Français égoïstes. Et Paul-François Paoli de demander de quel droit le publiciste Guy Sorman, qui vit aux Etats-Unis, prétend-il faire honte aux Européens qui en ont assez de l’immigration.
Paoli démontre que la gauche a un véritable problème avec l’identité française, notion qu’elle prétend réduire à ces « valeurs républicaines » idéalisées devant permettre le « vivre ensemble ». Bienvenue dans la novlangue pseudo-citoyenne.
Ce livre examine longuement ce débat occulté de l’identité de la France et s’interroge : les Français ont-ils des droits sur la France ? S’inquiétant de l’islamisation de la France, on regrettera que l’auteur prenne le parti d’Israël, comme si les Français n’étaient rien par eux-mêmes.
L’auteur termine par une dénonciation de la tyrannie compassionnelle et de la religion des droits de l’homme. Il fait une remarque essentielle : la religion catholique, en s’affaissant en France, a laissé un immense désert. Or, comme le remarquait Flaubert, il n’existe pas de peuple d’athées…
