Un Américain d’origine afghane, Omar Mateen, a ouvert le feu dans une discothèque homosexuelle d’Orlando en Floride, le Pulse club, causant la mort d’au moins 50 personnes, et 53 autres seraient blessées. Cela s’est passé dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche 12 juin. Le tireur a été abattu. Le FBI a aussitôt ouvert une enquête pour « acte de terrorisme ».
L’agresseur arrivé sur les lieux aux alentours de deux heures, a tiré en entrant, les clients se sont jetés à terre, mais un policier qui était parmi les clients a contre-attaqué avec son arme, de ce fait le tireur s’est réfugié à l’étage avec des otages. La police a alors décidé d’intervenir; à la mi-journée, les forces de l’ordre ont annoncé que le tireur était mort. Un responsable de la police a précisé: « Des indications laissent penser que le suspect, Omar Mateen, un Américain d’origine afghane, avait un penchant pour le terrorisme islamiste ». Le FBI a ouvert une enquête pour « acte de terrorisme ».
