Les premiers effets du rapprochement de l’Ukraine avec l’Union Européenne et les Etats-Unis se font déjà sentir dans un domaine prioritaire pour les euro-atlantistes : les revendications LGBT. Du 30 juin au 6 juillet, le lobby LGBT a pu organiser une série d’événements (conférences, expositions, rencontres,…) à Kiev, en partenariat avec la ville de Munich. Seul bémol pour le lobby LGBT : Vitali Klitschko, maire de Kiev, a demandé d’annuler la parade LGBT prévue pour le 5 juillet, considérant que ce n’était pas encore « un moment opportun » pour ce genre de défilé. La police a même fait savoir qu’elle ne pourrait en assurer la protection. D’autant que différents groupes nationalistes avaient annoncé qu’ils empêcheraient un tel défilé. Cette gay pride a été remplacée par « flash-mob » qui n’a pas réuni plus de 35 personnes dans le centre de Kiev.
En avril 2014, Olena Shevchenko, considérée comme leader LGBT en Ukraine et co-organisatrice du projet de gay pride à Kiev, avait été reçue aux Etats-Unis. Elle avait notamment participé à un programme de leadership « pour les défenseurs des droits de l’homme » organisé dans le Massachussets. Olena Shevchenko représente également l’Ukraine au sein d’ILGA, le lobby LGBT international notamment subventionné par l’Union européenne. Le 11 décembre 2012, à New York, le secrétaire général de l’ONU Ban Ki-moon avait tenu un discours sur « le leadership dans la lutte contre l’homophobie », discours au cours duquel il avait salué le « travail » d’Olena Shevchenko.
La question qui se pose encore : existe-t-il un quelconque lien de parenté entre Olena Shevchenko et Alexandra Sasha Shevchenko ainsi qu’Inna Shevchenko, toutes deux fondatrices des Femen et également ukrainiennes ?
