La justice néerlandaise s’est déclarée compétente pour juger Shell et c’est une décision qui va faire jurisprudence dans le domaine de l’environnement.
Pour de nombreux africains c’est une grande victoire que de voir ces filiales répondre de leurs faits.
En effet, depuis longtemps, les fermiers nigérians se plaignent de la pollution dans le delta du Niger. Shell est notamment responsable des fuites d’un oléoduc ; ce groupe pétrolier n’a pas nettoyé la pollution qu’il a provoqué et a détruit leurs terres et leurs étangs. Pour ce faire quatre ont porté cette affaire devant les juges et ces fermiers exigent le géant pétrolier soit jugé responsable des fuites, qu’il nettoie les dégâts dans leurs trois villages, s’engage à surveiller et mettre à jour son matériel défectueux, et leur paye des indemnités.
Dans le même temps ces multinationales et les pays occidentaux se drapent dans leur fausse virginité écologique.
