Après Sotchi, c’est la coupe du monde 2018 en Russie qui est menacé de boycott après les événements de Crimée. Visiblement Michel Platini, président de l’UEFA ne supporte plus ces demandes et affirmé en conférence de presse en avoir « ras-le-bol » des « demandes de boycott » d’événements sportifs par des intellectuels et des politiques : »Je commence à en avoir ras le bol, les gens qui font ce genre de demandes ne s’intéressent pas au sport le reste du temps, mais dès qu’il y a une manifestation sportive, ils disent:il ne faut pas y aller…Les politiques avaient boycotté l’Ukraine pendant l’Euro-2012, au début… mais après, pendant la finale, il y avait les premiers ministres espagnols et italiens » (ndlr: la finale de l’Euro 2012 s’est disputée entre l’Espagne et l’Italie). Il regrette que ce soit le sport qui soit systématiquement boycotté et préfère négocier: »Pour Sotchi, j’avais dit:il faut y aller et s’exprimer. Mais il y a souvent des soit-disant intellectuels qui demandent de ne pas y aller. Mieux vaut être à la table des négociations que de ne pas y être, c’est ce que je pense ». On remarque que ces soi-disant intellectuels sont beaucoup plus discrets quant à la coupe du monde 2022 qui doit se dérouler au Qatar…mais c’est vrai que c’est encore loin et qu’on a le temps !
