Le Tribunal correctionnel a reconnu Pierre Freyburger, ancien élu socialiste du Haut-Rhin, coupable d’avoir dérobé un crucifix ornant l’hémicycle du conseil général du Haut-Rhin. Le vol avait eu lieu en mars, en pleine campagne électorale pour les départementales. Bien que reconnu coupable, Pierre Freyburger, a été dispensé de peine.
« J’assume le décrochage du Christ (…) Je comprends que stricto sensu cela peut être assimilé à un vol, mais c’était un acte militant pour la laïcité », a déclaré M. Freyburger à l’AFP.
Le vol du crucifix du XVIIe siècle du conseil général n’a pas porté chance au conseiller général socialiste du Haut-Rhin et conseiller municipal de l’opposition à Mulhouse, qui a mis fin à sa carrière politique quelques jours après son action antichrétienne qui avait soulevé l’indignation du conseil général qui avait aussitôt porté plainte pour vol.
