Bernard Piccoli, instituteur, est le président de l’Association des Amis de Louis Pergaud.
Le nom de Louis Pergaud (1882-1915) n’évoquera quelque chose que parmi les lecteurs les plus érudits. Pourtant, quasiment chacun connait au moins l’une des œuvres de Louis Pergaud, à savoir La Guerre des boutons, roman de jeunesse désopilant.
Ce livre a le mérite de sortir de l’ombre cet auteur quelque peu oublié, petit instituteur qui connut le succès, de son vivant, avec le livre De Goupil à Margot qui reçut le prix Goncourt en 1910. Dans un premier temps, ses personnages fétiches sont des animaux. La Guerre des boutons, publié en 1913, est son premier récit dont les héros sont humains. Hélas, la première guerre mondiale vient écourter l’existence de Louis Pergaud. Le 3 août 1914, l’écrivain part pour Verdun où il est incorporé au 166e régiment d’Infanterie. Le 8 avril 1915, il trouve la mort au cours de l’attaque de la côte 233 de Marcheville, dans la Meuse.
