Après avoir choisi le 23 juin de quitter l’Union européenne par 52,5% des suffrages exprimés (soit un peu plus que la moyenne du Royaume-Uni, 51,9%), l’équipe de football du Pays de Galles a réussi à rester en course pour la coupe d’Europe de football en étant vainqueur de la Belgique par 3 buts à 1.
La Belgique était pourtant favorite, non seulement du match, mais aussi pour remporter la coupe d’Europe: elle est actuellement classée 2e meilleure équipe au monde et 1e équipe d’Europe. Le Pays de Galles, lui, n’est classé que 26e meilleure équipe au monde.
Le match avait pourtant mal débuté pour le Pays de Galles, qui a encaissé un but dès la 13e minute par un tir magnifique, à 30 mètres du but, de Nainggolan.
Le Pays de Galles parvenait à égalisait à la 31e minute, grâce à un but de la tête d’Ashley Williams. Suite à un dribble somptueux, Robson-Kanu donnait l’avantage aux Gallois à la 55e minute.
Les Belges donnent alors l’assaut au but gallois, mais malgré deux bonnes occasions, ne parviennent pas à égaliser.
Le Pays de Galles réussit au contraire à augmenter son avance à la 86e minute, grâce à un but de la tête de Vokes.
