Paul Janin (1890-1973) est un très talentueux artiste lyonnais auquel les éditions du Signe rendent un bel hommage en publiant ce magnifique album composé de ses carnets de guerre et d’une grande partie de ses œuvres réalisées au cœur de la Première Guerre mondiale durant laquelle il fit son devoir d’homme et de Français au sein d’un régiment d’élite, le 152e régiment d’infanterie.
On lit avec émotion le témoignage de cet homme au sujet de ses quatre années passées sur le front qui le hanteront jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. Surtout, on s’arrête attentivement sur chacun de ses dessins et aquarelles ainsi que de quelques sculptures. Au-delà des croquis panoramiques et des études d’équipement et d’armement utiles à l’état-major, il y a surtout ces scènes de vie et ces portraits qui captent notre regard et nous plongent dans le quotidien terrible de ces soldats dont nous comptons tous quelques membres parmi nos ancêtres.
Champs de ruines, combats, douleur, mort et moments de détente dans les tranchées alternent au gré des pages avec un réalisme impressionnant.
En ce centenaire de la Grande Guerre de 1914-1918, ce livre passionnera à la fois amateurs d’art et d’histoire.
