Le PDG de Moderna, l’un des principaux fabricants de vaccins anti-COVID-19, a déclaré qu’il pensait que le coronavirus était là pour rester. « Nous allons vivre avec ce virus, nous pensons, pour toujours », a déclaré Stéphane Bancel lors d’une table ronde de la conférence JPMorgan Healthcare mercredi dernier.
De nombreux experts de la santé, tels que le conseiller scientifique en chef du Royaume-Uni, Patrick Vallance, estiment que le COVID-19 est endémique, ce qui signifie qu’il sera toujours présent, tout comme la grippe.
L’émergence de nouvelles souches de COVID-19 soulève cependant la question de savoir si les autorités de santé publique jugeront les confinements perpétuellement nécessaires.
Le patron de Moderna lui-même a également suggéré que de nouveaux vaccins continueraient d’être produits à mesure que de nouvelles variantes du virus émergeraient.
« Des chercheurs de l’Ohio ont déclaré mercredi qu’ils avaient découvert deux nouvelles variantes probablement originaires des États-Unis et que l’une d’entre elles est rapidement devenue la souche dominante à Columbus, Ohio, sur une période de trois semaines fin décembre et début janvier », a rapporté CNBC .
Le COVID-19 serait, semble-t-il, le cinquième coronavirus à devenir endémique. Ensemble, les quatre autres sont responsables d’environ un quart de tous les rhumes.
