Mardi dernier, à New York, des centaines de juifs orthodoxes se sont rassemblés devant la mission israélienne de l’ONU afin de marquer leur opposition contre la nouvelle politique menée par Israël. En effet, d’après une nouvelle loi, les juifs orthodoxes sont désormais obligés de faire leur service militaire en Israël.
Ceux qui refuseront de se plier à cette obligation pourraient être emprisonnés par le gouvernement. Cela a donc irrité au plus haut point les juifs orthodoxes de New York. Ainsi, le rabbin Moishe Indig a déclaré : « Notre foi ne nous autorise pas à mettre en place de nouvelles règles tous les jours. Nous sommes contre l’État d’Israël et toutes les guerres qu’il mène ».
Pour certains manifestants, la révolte est profonde. En effet, ils se disent contre l’existence de « l’État d’Israël » car cela va à l’encontre de leur foi. C’est ainsi que Jacob Kellner, un juif orthodoxe participant à la manifestation a déclaré que « l’État et l’armée israélienne sont illégaux car les écritures saintes ne confèrent pas aux Juifs le droit d’établir un État ».
