Jean-Marie Salamito, professeur d’histoire du christianisme antique à Paris IV Sorbonne, est un spécialiste de saint Augustin et l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages.
Ce livre de Jean-Marie Salamito est une réponse au livre Décadence de Michel Onfray, plus encore une réfutation, rétablissant quelques vérités historiques sur Jésus et le christianisme.
Jean-Marie Salamito ne propose pas un jugement d’ensemble sur Décadence, encore moins sur Michel Onfray, mais prend seulement en compte ce qu’il a écrit sur le christianisme antique. Le lecteur y trouvera un antidote aux pages assez violentes de Décadence.
Car Michel Onfray a la prétention d’affirmer que Jésus de Nazareth n’aurait tout simplement jamais existé et veut dénoncer « un Jésus de papier« . Mais si il y a un Jésus de papier, c’est bien celui que Michel Onfray a dessiné de sa propre main, selon son imagination, au lieu d’en rechercher méthodiquement la trace dans les sources disponibles. Jean-Marie Salamito démontre comment Michel Onfray fourvoie ses lecteurs.
