Peu avant leur huitième de finale face au Costa Rica, les joueurs grecs ont envoyé une lettre au Premier ministre Antonis Samaras pour expliquer leur décision de renoncer à leurs primes:« Nous ne voulons pas de primes ou d’argent. Nous ne jouons que pour la Grèce et le peuple grec. Tout ce que nous attendons de vous, c’est une aide pour trouver un endroit et y construire un centre d’entraînement pour notre équipe nationale. » Pour beaucoup, cette décision est symbolique dans un pays durement touché par la crise
De son côté, avant le mondial,les joueurs de l’équipe de France ont déjà annoncé qu’ils reverseraient l’intégralité de leurs primes à une association caritative…un moyen de couper court à toute polémique. Depuis 2010, les primes étaient gelées et ont été réactivées pour le mondial. Il a été entendu avec la Fédération que les joueurs se partageront 30% des dotations versées par la FIFA à la Fédération. En cas de victoire en finale, ils toucheront 330000 euros. Avec leur accession en quart, c’est déjà 130000 euros assurés.
