Dans le climat ultra-violent qui règne à Apatzigán (ville du Michoacan) et à la suite des diverses menaces de meurtre qui pèsent sur le clergé, le Père Gregorio Lopez a été forcé de célébrer la messe vêtu d’un gilet pare-balles .
Le prêtre a appelé les autorités à capturer les chefs de gang.
La violence dans la région a conduit il y a quelques jours Mgr Miguel Patiño Velázquez, évêque d’Apatzingan, à encourager les fidèles de son diocèse à ne pas perdre espoir devant les actes criminels graves de ces derniers jours. Certains ont quitté la communauté « submergés par la peur et l’anxiété ».
De son côté, le Cardinal Francisco Robles a déclaré que l’Eglise catholique était grandement préoccupée par la violence observée dans le Michoacan, et estime qu’il existe un risque d’extension. Cependant, il espère que le gouvernement fera le nécessaire et que le bouclage de la frontière aura des résultats positifs. Le Cardinal a également dit comprendre les religieux des communautés du Michoacán qui soutiennent les groupes d’auto-défense.
