Mattel présente sa première poupée Barbie en hijab

Mattel va commercialiser sa première poupée Barbie portant un hijab. Cette poupée sera à l’effigie d’Ibtihaj Muhammad, médaillée de bronze américaine en escrime aux Jeux Olympiques 2016 à Rio, mais aussi première athlète américaine voilée à avoir participé aux JO.

C’est le lundi 13 novembre,  durant le sommet Women of the Year du magazine « Glamour » à New York, que la poupée Barbie a été présentée.
Ibtihaj Muhammad a précisé dans un communiqué :
« J’aime le fait (…) que désormais j’aie ma propre poupée qui porte un hijab et que la prochaine génération de jeunes filles va pouvoir l’utiliser pour jouer et rêver ».
 « Merci Mattel de faire de moi le nouveau membre de la famille Barbie. Je suis fière que des filles du monde entier puissent jouer avec une Barbie qui choisit de porter un hijab ». 

Ibtihaj Muhammad fait partie des « 100 personnes les plus influentes » de 2016 selon le magazine Time et a lancé sa ligne de vêtements dédiée à la femme musulmane.

En mars dernier, toujours aux Etats-Unis, des femmes s’étaient associées pour commercialiser des hijab pour ajouter aux poupées Barbie.
