Joël Schmidt, historien, a publié nombre d’ouvrages consacrés à l’Antiquité romaine. Son nouveau livre, Martyrs de Lyon, nous mène en l’an 177 après Jésus-Christ. L’histoire de ces martyrs s’est déroulée sous le règne de l’empereur Marc Aurèle, pourtant souvent présenté comme le plus sage et le plus cultivé des chefs d’Etat que s’est donnée Rome. Cet ouvrage examine les contradictions insurmontables qui ont marqué la relation entre Marc Aurèle, philosophe de l’école stoïcienne, et le christianisme. Joël Schmidt tente donc de faire comprendre au lecteur comment Marc Aurèle a accepté que son nom soit attaché à cette page sanglante de l’histoire de l’Empire romain comme on n’en avait plus connu d’aussi féroce depuis les tourments infligés par Néron aux chrétiens en 64 de notre ère, transformés en torches vivantes dans les jardins du Vatican et suivis par la mort des apôtres Paul et Pierre.
Ce livre nous rappelle sur plusieurs pages la description terrible par Eusèbe de Césarée, dans la lettre aux chrétiens d’Orient, du sort abominable réservé aux martyrs de Lyon conduits dans l’amphithéâtre, parmi lesquels Blandine, suspendue à un poteau et exposée en pâture aux bêtes qui se jetaient sur elle.
