Guillaume Payen, docteur en histoire, chercheur associé au centre Roland-Mousnier et chef du pôle histoire du centre de recherche de l’Ecole des officiers de la Gendarmerie nationale, s’est attelé à une tâche ardue en décidant d’écrire une biographie de Martin Heidegger, ce qui nécessite une double culture : historique et philosophique.
Avec une véritable talent d’écrivain, Guillaume Payen nous fait découvrir les différentes étapes – et les ruptures – qui ont rythmé la vie et l’œuvre de Heidegger. Car quoi de commun entre l’adolescent enraciné dans une foi catholique brûlante et le professeur convaincu que le nazisme est la chance de l’Allemagne, sinon un égal refus de la modernité ?
Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), élevé dans un catholicisme ardent, au point de songer à se destiner à la prêtrise, s’en éloigne progressivement jusqu’à rompre avec lui en 1917. La raison de cette rupture est le péché d’orgueil. Incapable de patienter, il rendit les milieux catholiques responsables de la lenteur de la progression de sa carrière universitaire, lui qui était convaincu de sa supériorité intellectuelle !
Il fait ensuite la rencontre d’une étudiante protestante qui devient sa maîtresse, puis sa femme, ce qui le pousse à brûler ce qu’il avait adorer et à haïr le catholicisme dont il avait été un croyant zélé.
Puis, au sortir de la première guerre mondiale, le conflit a convaincu Heidegger de la nécessité d’une révolution qui régénérerait le peuple allemand. Il s’engage très tôt sous la bannière du national-socialisme. Mais il en est déçu dès 1934 et rompt une fois de plus.
Ce livre, véritable pavé, examine avec minutie un personnage extrêmement complexe.
