Fils d’immigrés pakistanais, de religion musulmane, le candidat du Labour Party pour la charge de maire de Londres est en tête dans les sondages.
Londres, avec ses 5,7 millions d’électeurs, ira voter pour son futur maire dans 3 jours pour choisir le successeur de Boris Johnson qui, aujourd’hui, conduit la campagne pour le Brexit en Grande-Bretagne.
Plus grande capitale européenne, cœur de la finance internationale, ville multi-ethnique par excellence, Londres risque de se réveiller dans quelques jours avec le premier maire musulman de son histoire, Sadiq Khan, 45 ans. Immigré de la seconde génération, d’une famille de 8 enfants, d’humble extraction, tout l’oppose au candidat du parti conservateur, Zac Goldsmith, 41 ans, descendant de l’illustre famille juive allemande et ancien étudiant d’Eton et Cambridge, multimillionnaire.
Ces élections ont déchaîné une lutte féroce. En effet, la capitale du Royaume-Uni reste un des objectifs principaux du terrorisme islamique et il est impossible pour les Tory de ne pas ignorer et jouer sur le fait que le candidat travailliste est un musulman « dévot », un pratiquant. Il est suspecté par les Tory, qui en ont fait un argument majeur de leur campagne, d’être proche des milieux islamistes et antisémites. Il est attaqué pour avoir participé à une rencontre où était présent feu l’imam extrémiste d’Al Qaida, Anwar al-Awlaki, d’avoir tenu un discours, en 2008, au principal « festival » multiculturel musulman sur lequel flottait le drapeau noir du djihad et d’avoir un beau-frère, militant du groupe islamiste al-Mujajiroun.
En somme, aucun candidat pur jus pour la City londonienne !
