Certes, les qualités physiques et des centres de formations des footballeurs jouent un très grand rôle dans la construction d’une équipe de football de qualité.
Mais il est aussi incontestable que plus le nombre de joueurs est grand, plus les chances de trouver des joueurs ayant de fortes aptitudes naturelles pour être des joueurs de niveau international sont élevées.
Or, si on prend en compte la natalité d’il y a 18 ans en Italie (il faut tenir compte de l’âge des joueurs) et qu’on la compare à la natalité en 1964, cela donne ceci:
1964: 1 035 207 naissances vivantes
1999: 537 242 naissances vivantes, soit 48,1% en moins et donc 48,1% de chances en moins, toutes choses étant égales par ailleurs, de trouver et de former des joueurs de niveau international.
D’ailleurs, sur le long terme, parmi les pays où le football est un sport attirant beaucoup de jeunes, ce sont quand même les pays ayant les plus grandes populations qui se qualifient le plus souvent en phase finale de coupe du monde ou d’Europe: le Brésil, l’Argentine, l’Allemagne, la France, l’Italie (jusqu’en 2014!), l’Espagne, l’Angleterre etc.
