« Nous vivons un moment transcendental et historique. Nous avons de l’espoir et de grandes attentes à la suite de la restauration des relations diplomatiques entre Cuba et les Etats-Unis », a déclaré David Prinstein, vice-président de la communauté cubaine juive, à l’Agencia Judia de Noticias, à la suite de la visite d’Obama qui s’est terminée mardi.
David Prinstein a rappelé que les Juifs américains n’ont jamais cessé de visiter Cuba. Les trois synagogues de la Havane, les deux cimetières juifs, l’exposition sur l’Holocauste et les services religieux sont très fréquentés.
L’institut sioniste Nahum Goldmann (du nom du fondateur du Congrès juif mondial), sponsorisé par la Fondation Mémorial pour la Culture juive, a organisé le mois dernier, une rencontre à la Havane entre juifs d’Amérique Latine âgés de 25-40 ans sur le thème du leadership juif. Cet organisme fondé il y a 28 ans a officiellement pour objectif de former « une nouvelle génération de dirigeants juifs à travers le monde ». C’était la première fois que l’événement avait lieu à Cuba.
Selon le Congrès Juif d’Amérique Latine, environ 1 500 Juifs vivent à Cuba.
