Bernard Monot, député européen et ancien responsable du programme économique du Front national, quitte le FN auquel il avait adhéré en 1989.
Au Parlement européen, il rejoint le groupe européen EFD présidé par le britannique Nigel Farage.
Bernard Monot a expliqué son départ par le constat que «le FN n’avait désormais plus de stratégie, plus de direction ni de cap. Et que dans ses conditions il préférait partir», rapporte un autre eurodéputé.
Au Figaro, Bernard Monot explique : « Je pense faire ces prochains jours une conférence pour expliquer mon choix. »
Marine Le Pen a réagi en déclarant à L’Opinion que «ce n’est pas une perte». Mais son parti s’affaiblit de mois en mois, perdant des élus à tous les niveaux de pouvoir.
Au sein du groupe parlementaire européen de Nigel Farage, Bernard Monot va retrouver d’autres démissionnaires du FN tels que les eurodéputés Patriotes Florian Philippot, Sophie Montel et Mireille d’Ornano, ainsi que Joëlle Bergeron. Il rejoindra au sein du groupe la délégation de cette dernière.
