Pour l’instant, même à l’intérieur des territoires contrôlés par l’Etat Islamique, le dollar règne en maître. Les salaires des djihadistes sont ainsi payés en dollars.
L’Etat Islamique dit avoir l’intention de mettre en place une alternative.
A côté du dinar or, des dirhams d’argent et des fulus de cuivre devraient servir pour les transactions de la vie courante, revenant ainsi aux usages institués sous le Califat ommeyade et restés d’application jusqu’au XIXème siècle.
