Les forces militaires irakiennes ont abandonné 2.300 véhicules américains blindés tout-terrains Humvee aux djihadistes de l’État islamique lors de la chute de Mossoul en juin 2014, a avoué dimanche le Premier ministre Haider al-Abadi.
« Dans l’effondrement de Mossoul, nous avons perdu beaucoup d’armes », a déclaré Abadi un an après, au cours d’une interview à la télévision d’Etat Iraqiya. « Nous avons perdu 2.300 Humvee à Mossoul. »
Le prix exact de ces véhicules varie en fonction de la façon dont ils sont blindés et équipés, mais la valeur totale de ces 2.300 Humvee est considérable et a encore stimulé les capacités de Isis.
L’année dernière, le Département d’Etat américain avait approuvé une vente supplémentaire à l’Irak de 1.000 Humvee avec blindage, mitrailleuses, lance-grenades, et autre matériel de soutien, pour un montant estimé à 579 millions de dollars.
Les militaires irakiens ont aussi abandonné aux djihadistes d’importants stocks de munitions et d’autres équipements de plusieurs divisions irakiennes.
