Les Israéliens d’origine éthiopienne se plaignent fréquemment du racisme et des discriminations qu’ils subissent de la part des autres Juifs. Ainsi, à Petah Tikva, dans le centre d’Israël, plusieurs juifs noirs affirment qu’ils se voient régulièrement refuser l’autorisation de se marier par le rabbinat de la ville, où les rabbins remettent en cause leur judéité. Dans cette ville, la communauté d’origine éthiopienne regroupe environ 10.000 personnes. Mais elle a bien du mal à s’entendre avec le grand rabbin sépharade Binyamin Atias.
A la radio israélienne, Shega, une Israélienne d’origine éthiopienne dont le mariage a récemment été refusé par l’officier du rabbinat, a expliqué qu’après avoir montré les papiers prouvant sa conversion, l’officier du rabbinat lui a demandé de produire une attestation d’un rabbin prouvant qu’elle était juive orthodoxe pratiquante. Selon Shega, ce sont au moins 30 couples d’Israéliens d’origine éthiopienne qui ont récemment connu de telles mésaventures.
La question des juifs éthiopiens est complexe. Lorsqu’ils sont arrivés en Israël, les juifs éthiopiens de la communauté Beta Israël ont été reconnus comme pleinement juifs mais ceux appartenant à la communauté Falash Mura, qui s’est convertie du judaïsme au christianisme au 19e siècle, doivent pratiquer une conversion orthodoxe après avoir immigré en Israël.
En Israël, le seul moyen légal de se marier pour les citoyens juifs est de passer par le rabbinat.
Selon le rabbin Chuck Davidson, cette discrimination à l’encontre des juifs d’origine éthiopienne n’est pas rare. Les rabbinats locaux sont nombreux à refuser de reconnaître leurs conversions. Et ce malgré un jugement rendu en 2013 par la haute cour de justice qui interdit aux rabbins municipaux de demander plus de preuves de la judéité d’un converti.
